Module Overview

Module 1: A Day in the Life of a Tennessee Airport Manager

  • The purpose of Module 1 is to provide a baseline understanding of the different components of an airport manager’s everyday life. This Module explores the many roles and responsibilities that airport personnel must shoulder.
  • It is assumed that many attendees may be new to the aviation field; this Module serves as an “Airports 101.” This Module includes an aviation system overview, a basic airport overview, daily routine maintenance information, community engagement information, and an intro to emergency and disaster response.

Module 2: Project Management Overview

  • The purpose of Module 2 is to provide a baseline understanding of project management and equip attendees with the knowledge necessary to communicate and coordinate with TDOT Aeronautics Division, participate in the Airport Capital Improvement Plan (ACIP), and understand a typical project lifecycle and funding. Content in this Module is geared towards someone new to the aviation field in Tennessee.
  • Module 2 serves as an introduction to project management. The Module has three main subsections, including an introduction to TDOT Aeronautics Division, its offices, and programs; an overview of a typical project lifecycle; and an overview of aviation project funding sources and the funding process.

Module 3: Run Your Airport Like a Business

  • The purpose of Module 3 is to understand that rates and charges are a fundamental aspect of maximizing revenues, helping an airport work toward self-sufficiency. There are a variety of aeronautical revenue drivers such as fuel charges and hangar rent that can produce significant revenues if priced correctly to reflect true market conditions.
  • Module 3 provides an introduction about how to run an airport like a business with an emphasis on understanding airport revenue drivers, promoting airport self-sufficiency, and understanding rates and charges.

Module 4: Airport Safety is the Ultimate Goal

  • Module 4 focuses on the ultimate goal of any aviation professional: maintaining and enhancing airport safety. The Module focuses on the fundamental components of airport safety.
  • Module 4 is broken down into four sections including the Foundation of Airport and Airfield Safety, Airfield Safety Starts with Airport Staff, and Understanding State Safety Requirements, and Corrective Action Plans (CAPs).

Module 5: Understanding State and Federal Laws and Regulations, Airport Planning, and Environmental Programs and Policies

  • The purpose of Module 5 is to provide an introduction to aviation laws and regulations as well as an understanding of the Airport Layout Plan (ALP) Process.
  • Numerous aviation laws and regulations enhance the safety and efficiency of the aviation system. They also have impacts on the surrounding environment and public. This Module also focuses on understanding the ALP process by explaining what an ALP is, the importance of having updating it, and the required coordination when developing and adopting an ALP.
